President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended heartfelt condolences to British-Nigerian boxing superstar Anthony Joshua following a tragic road accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway that claimed two lives and left the former heavyweight champion with minor injuries.

In a personal message posted on his official X account (@officialABAT), the President wrote: “AJ, I extend my deep sympathies to you following the tragic accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, which claimed two precious lives and caused you injuries. This immense tragedy casts a deep shadow on this season. As a sportsman, you have always shown courage, discipline, and unwavering love for our country. These are qualities that have made you a source of national pride. May God grant you a speedy recovery and grant repose to the souls of the departed.”

The accident occurred around 11 a.m. on Monday in Makun, Ogun State, near the Sagamu Interchange. Joshua, a passenger in a black Lexus SUV, was en route to visit family in his ancestral hometown when the vehicle, suspected of excessive speed and wrongful overtaking, collided with a stationary red commercial Sinotruck parked on the roadside, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

Two passengers in Joshua’s vehicle died at the scene, while two others escaped unhurt. Joshua sustained minor injuries and was evacuated to an undisclosed hospital for treatment.

Eyewitness accounts and viral videos showed bystanders rushing to rescue Joshua from the wreckage, with the boxer appearing dazed and in pain as he was assisted into a police vehicle for transport to the hospital.

The incident sparked widespread outrage on social media, with Nigerians criticizing the FRSC and police for alleged delays in response and the lack of an ambulance or proper medical equipment at the scene. Many highlighted that a global icon like Joshua, valued at over $100 million, was transported in a police car without a stretcher, underscoring systemic failures in emergency services.

“The FRSC did not spot and evacuate the broken-down truck despite it being parked there for days,” one viral post noted, while others lamented: “No ambulance arrived promptly; good Samaritans and police had to improvise.”

The Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, one of Nigeria’s busiest and deadliest corridors, has long been plagued by poorly parked trucks, potholes, and inadequate enforcement.

FRSC officials confirmed they arrived “within minutes” and rescued victims but reiterated warnings against speeding and dangerous overtaking. Ogun State Police have launched an investigation.

Joshua, fresh off a sixth-round knockout victory over Jake Paul on December 19 in Miami, was on holiday in Nigeria. His promoter, Eddie Hearn, confirmed he is “OK” but shaken.
