Six members of the House of Representatives from Rivers State, elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Tuesday defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), further shrinking the opposition’s presence in the state’s caucus.

The lawmakers are Dumnamene Dekor, Solomon Bob, Cyril Hart Godwin, Victor Obuzor, Blessing Amadi and Felix Uche Nwaeke.

Their separate letters of defection were read on the floor of the House by the Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, who cited divisions and unresolved political crises within the PDP as the reasons given by the lawmakers for their decision.

In their letters, the defecting legislators said persistent leadership disputes and deep internal divisions within the PDP had made it impossible for them to effectively pursue their legislative and political aspirations. They pledged their support for the APC and alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

With the latest defections, the PDP’s representation from Rivers State in the House has been significantly depleted. The development comes days after three other PDP lawmakers from the state Boniface Emerengwa, Awaji-Inombek Abiante and Boma Goodhead defected to the APC, alongside Manuchim Umezuruike, who moved from the Labour Party to the ruling party.

The wave of defections is widely linked to ongoing political realignments in Rivers State, which have intensified in recent weeks.

Following the latest moves, only three lawmakers from Rivers State remain in the House of Representatives on the PDP platform. They are the Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda, Kelechi Nworgu and Anderson Allison Igbiks.
