The International Law Association Nigeria (ILA Nigeria) has announced H.E. Dr. Fatou Bensouda, former Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), as the keynote speaker for its 9th Annual Conference scheduled for 2026.

In a statement issued by the association, ILA Nigeria described Dr. Bensouda as a globally respected legal practitioner whose career has been defined by her commitment to justice, accountability, and the rule of law at both national and international levels.

Dr. Bensouda served for nine years as Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, during which she led landmark prosecutions involving warlords, heads of state, and other individuals accused of grave international crimes. Her tenure at the ICC is widely regarded as one of the most consequential in the court’s history.

She currently serves as The Gambia’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and previously held office as Minister of Justice and Attorney General of The Gambia. She also worked as a legal adviser at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda.

An alumna of Obafemi Awolowo University and the Nigerian Law School, Dr. Bensouda holds a Master of Laws degree from the UN/IMO International Maritime Law Institute. Her distinguished career has earned her numerous international honours, including the ICJ International Jurists Award, the World Peace Through Law Award, the American Society of International Law’s Honorary Membership Award, the United Nations Association of Spain Peace Prize, and the Praeis Elit Award.

According to ILA Nigeria, her keynote address is expected to provide deep insights into contemporary challenges in international law, with particular focus on accountability mechanisms and the fight against economic and financial crimes.

The association noted that Dr. Bensouda’s participation underscores its commitment to fostering high-level discourse on international legal developments and strengthening Nigeria’s engagement with global legal practice.
