The Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun has reaffirmed the commitment of the nation’s judiciary to safeguarding human rights as guaranteed under the 1999 Constitution and various international treaties.

Speaking on Thursday at a conference themed “Proportional Force and Respect for Human Dignity: A Dialogue in Governance”, organized by the National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, in collaboration with Citizen FM, the CJN emphasized that the judiciary remains unwavering in its constitutional mandate to uphold the rule of law and protect citizens’ rights.

Justice Babatunde Adeniran Adejumo, Administrator of the National Judicial Institute, NJI, represented the Chief Justice at the event.

In her goodwill message, Justice Kekere-Ekun congratulated the NHRC on its 30th anniversary and commended the organizers for hosting the event in commemoration of International Human Rights Day.

She stressed that the exercise of authority with restraint, discipline, and accountability strengthens public trust and enhances the legitimacy of state institutions.

The CJN reiterated that the judiciary will continue to ensure adequate remedies where human rights are violated.

“Let me make it abundantly clear that the judiciary remains steadfast in its constitutional mandate to uphold the rule of law and protect the rights of citizens,” she stated.

Justice Kekere-Ekun further praised the NHRC for promoting dialogue and raising awareness on critical human rights issues in Nigeria.
