The Chief Judge of Kwara State, Justice Abiodun Adebara, has released 17 inmates from the Ilorin Custodial Centre in Okekura and the Mandala Custodial Centre as part of efforts to decongest the facilities.

During visits to the centres, Justice Adebara granted eight inmates conditional freedom, discharged two fully from the old Ilorin Custodial Centre, four from Mandala, and conditionally released an additional two from Mandala.

The chief judge said the releases targeted inmates held for long periods without trial, those with health challenges, and those without credible charges. “The exercise was part of the judiciary’s statutory duty to decongest correctional facilities and ensure that justice is not only done but seen to be done,” he stated.

Justice Adebara urged stakeholders in the justice system to work together to prevent unnecessary delays and prolonged detention for those awaiting trial. He also praised officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service for their cooperation, reaffirming the Kwara State Judiciary’s commitment to human rights and the rule of law.

The State Controller of Corrections, Tolorunshagba Emmanuel, thanked the chief judge and advised the released inmates to embrace positive change to avoid returning to custody.
