U.S. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth says America’s Department of War is working “aggressively” with Nigeria to end what he described as the persecution of Christians by jihadist terrorists.

Hegseth disclosed this in a post on X on Friday, a day after meeting with Nigeria’s National Security Advisor, Nuhu Ribadu, and his delegation in Washington.

“Under @POTUS leadership, DOW is working aggressively with Nigeria to end the persecution of Christians by jihadist terrorists,” the U.S. Defence Secretary wrote. “Yesterday, I met with Nigeria’s National Security Advisor and his team to discuss the horrific violence against Christians in their country.”

The Nigerian delegation, led by Ribadu, is in the United States to engage with American authorities following President Donald Trump’s recent threat to deploy U.S. soldiers to confront terrorists responsible for killings across several Nigerian communities.

During the visit, the Nigerian team also met with U.S. lawmaker Riley Moore, a prominent voice among lawmakers campaigning against what they describe as an ongoing Christian genocide in Nigeria.

Moore, recently appointed by President Trump to investigate the killings of Christians in Nigeria, said on Thursday that he had made it clear to Nigerian officials that tackling the violence must be treated as a matter of urgency.

The meetings come amid heightened international concern over rising insecurity in parts of Nigeria, particularly attacks on rural communities in the North-Central and North-West regions.
