The Benue State House of Assembly on Tuesday suspended two of its former leaders Mr. Saater Tiseer (APC, Mbagwa), a former Majority Leader, and Mr. Michael Audu (PDP, Adoka-Ugboju), a former Minority Leader over allegations of gross misconduct.

The decision followed a motion moved by the current Majority Leader, Mr. Thomas Dugeri (APC, Kwande West), during plenary in Makurdi.

Dugeri stated that the conduct of the two former leaders while in office brought the Assembly into disrepute. He said an ad hoc committee set up to investigate their activities found them guilty of using their positions for personal benefit, contrary to the oath of office and membership of the House.

“The Assembly must uphold discipline and integrity. Any member found guilty of actions capable of tarnishing the image of this institution must face consequences,” Dugeri declared.

The motion was seconded by Dr. Elias Audu (APC, Gwer East), who underscored the link between the legislature’s stability and that of the state. “When the House is not stable, the state will be unstable. I urge that a special committee work with the Ethics Committee to further unravel issues surrounding the former leaders,” he said.

In his ruling, the Speaker, Mr. Alfred Emberga, announced that Tiseer would be suspended for six months, while Audu would serve a three-month suspension.

He said the decision was to serve as a deterrent to others and reaffirm the Assembly’s commitment to ethical conduct and accountability among its members.
