President Bola Tinubu has written to the Senate with two separate requests — the confirmation of a new ministerial nominee and approval for a fresh domestic borrowing to finance the 2025 budget deficit.

In the first letter, Tinubu asked the Senate to confirm Dr. Kingsley Tochukwu Udeh, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and current Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Enugu State, as a Minister of the Federal Republic.

The request was contained in a letter read during Tuesday’s plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

“I am pleased to forward to the Senate the nomination of Dr. Kingsley Tochukwu Ude, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, for confirmation as Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Tinubu stated.

“While I hope that this request will receive the usual expeditious consideration of the Senate, please accept, the Senate President and distinguished senators, the assurances of my highest regards.”

After reading the letter, Senator Akpabio referred the nomination to the Committee of the Whole for immediate consideration and screening.

In a separate correspondence, the President sought Senate approval to borrow ₦1.15 trillion from the domestic debt market to bridge the funding gap in the 2025 fiscal plan and ensure full implementation of government programmes and projects.

Senate President Akpabio referred the borrowing request to the Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Debt, chaired by Senator Aliyu Wammako (APC, Sokoto North), with a directive to report back within one week for further legislative action.
