U.S. lawmaker Riley Moore, a vocal campaigner against the alleged Christian genocide in Nigeria, on Monday criticized former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, labeling him an enabler of Sharia law that punishes blasphemy with death.

Moore made the statement in a post on X, responding to Kwankwaso’s stance on President Donald Trump’s threat to invade Nigeria to target terrorists allegedly killing Christians. “Governor – do you care to comment on your own complicity in the death of Christians? You instituted Sharia law,” Moore wrote in reply to Kwankwaso’s post.

Recalling how Kwankwaso signed the Sharia Penal Code Bill into law in November 2000 as governor of Kano State, Moore added, “You signed the law that makes so-called blasphemy punishable by death.”

Moore’s remarks came in response to Kwankwaso’s position that the United States should assist Nigeria in combating insecurity using advanced technology, rather than issuing threats that could worsen divisions in the country.

The former Kano State governor made this call after Trump ordered the U.S. Department of War to prepare for a potential invasion of Nigeria to combat terrorists targeting Christians.

Trump’s declaration followed weeks of an online campaign, led by Ted Cruz, Moore, Nancy Mace, and other American lawmakers, urging Nigeria’s designation as a Country of Particular Concern. Cruz, a Republican U.S. senator, also proposed a bill targeting Nigerian public officials who promote Sharia and blasphemy laws.

In his X post on November 2, Kwankwaso responded to Trump:

“I have noted with increasing concern the heightened pronouncements on Nigeria by President Donald Trump. This follows his designation of Nigeria as a ‘country of particular concern.’

“It is important to emphasise that our country is a sovereign nation whose people face various threats from outlaws across the country. The insecurity we face does not discriminate based on religion, ethnicity, or political beliefs.

“The United States should assist Nigerian authorities with advanced technology to tackle these problems, rather than posing a threat that could further polarize our nation.

“The Nigerian government should also consider appointing special envoys from its distinguished diplomats to engage the American government. Additionally, it is necessary to appoint permanent ambassadors to represent Nigeria’s interests on the international stage.

“To my fellow countrymen, this is an important moment where we should emphasise unity over division.”
