The Chief Judge of Ebonyi State, Justice Elvis Ngene, has described corruption in the judicial system as a major threat to fair hearing and access to justice in Nigeria.

Ngene stated that corruption within the justice delivery system often manifests through bribery, manipulation, and the perversion of justice for monetary or political gains.

He made the remarks in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, on Friday during the ceremony marking the commencement of the 2025/2026 Legal Year.

The Chief Judge acknowledged that integrity challenges persist within the Nigerian judiciary, noting that public perception of corruption among judicial and court officers discourages many citizens from seeking redress in court.

According to him, some people now prefer to settle their disputes personally rather than through the courts because of the menace of corruption.

Ngene urged judicial officers to remain “true and faithful to the constitution and the law,” maintaining the highest ethical standards. He reminded them that any act of misconduct undermines the credibility of the entire justice system.
