Six opposition members of the House of Representatives have officially defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), strengthening the party’s presence in the National Assembly.

The group includes five lawmakers from Enugu State Obetta Chidi, Anayo Onwuegbu, Dennis Agbo, Martins George, and Nnaji Nnolim whose defection was formally witnessed by Governor Peter Mbah at the House chamber. The sixth lawmaker, Daniel Asama from Plateau State, also joined the APC, all having moved from the Labour Party (LP).

The Enugu lawmakers’ defection follows Governor Mbah’s own political switch two weeks ago from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC. In a state-wide broadcast, Mbah defended his decision, stating that the move was crucial for aligning the south-eastern state with the federal government.

“There comes always a time when everyone must make a bold choice to determine their destiny. Today, after a long reflection, we have made a decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party and join the All Progressives Congress,” the governor said.

This development mirrors earlier political shifts in other states. In July, seven members of the House from opposition parties in Akwa Ibom State joined Governor Umo Eno in the APC. They included six lawmakers from the PDP Unyime Idem, Martins Esin, Paul Ekpo, Uduak Odudoh, Okpolu Etteha, and Bassey Okon while Emmanuel Ukpong-Udo moved from another party.

Similarly, in May, six lawmakers from Delta State defected from the PDP to the APC, reflecting a broader trend of opposition lawmakers aligning with the ruling party ahead of future elections.
