The Ondo and Kogi State governments have called for calm following a leaked security alert by the Department of State Services (DSS) warning of planned coordinated attacks on communities in Ondo State by the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP).

The memo, addressed to the Brigade Commander of the 32 Artillery Brigade in Akure, identified potential target locations, including Oyin-Akoko and Eriti-Akoko in Akoko North-West Local Council and Owo, headquarters of Owo Local Council Area. According to the DSS, the group has begun surveillance of potential soft targets, prompting urgent implementation of heightened security measures.

Ondo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Idowu Ajanaku, described the leaked intelligence as routine, noting that such reports help the government and security agencies assess threats and take proactive measures. He assured residents that the government, under Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, is in constant contact with security agencies and has implemented precautions to ensure public safety.

Ajanaku said: “We urge all residents to remain calm and vigilant, report any suspicious activity, and cooperate with security agencies. Every measure is being taken to prevent any attack in Ondo State.”

Confirming the development, the Police spokesperson in Ondo, Olayinka Ayanlade, said Commissioner of Police Adebowale Lawal had convened high-powered security meetings with stakeholders from the Akoko axis, deploying operational and intelligence assets to prevent any threat.

The alert comes three years after suspected ISWAP terrorists carried out a deadly attack on St Francis Catholic Church, Owo, on June 5, 2022, killing 41 worshippers and injuring dozens. The suspects are currently facing trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

In Kogi State, Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, echoed the call for calm, praising the DSS and other security agencies for their vigilance. He emphasized that Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has prioritized the protection of lives and property, with strategic security measures reinforced across the state, especially in border communities.

Fanwo stated: “The report itself is evidence that our security agencies are alive to their responsibilities. We commend the DSS for providing early intelligence capable of preventing such evil plans from being executed. Residents should continue with their normal activities but remain security-conscious and report any suspicious movement or individuals.”

Both states reassured citizens that collaborative efforts with the DSS, Nigerian Army, Police, and other security formations aim to neutralize any potential terrorist plots before they pose a threat, ensuring that Ondo and Kogi remain among the safest states in Nigeria.
