The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) caucus in the House of Representatives has called on the National Judicial Council (NJC) to caution judges against being used by politicians to undermine Nigeria’s democracy.

In a statement on Monday by the caucus leader, Fredrick Agbedi, the lawmakers expressed concern over alleged judicial interference in political party affairs, warning that such actions threaten the stability of the country’s democratic process.

The opposition lawmakers were reacting to Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/2120/2025, reportedly filed by PDP state chairmen—Austine Nwachukwu (Imo), Amah Abraham Nnanna (Abia), and Turnah George—seeking to stall party meetings, congresses, and the national convention pending the determination of the substantive case.

The PDP caucus lamented that despite repeated Supreme Court rulings against judicial interference in internal party matters, some judges continue to entertain such suits.

“We are deeply concerned that despite repeated Supreme Court pronouncements against judicial interference in the internal affairs of political parties, some judges continue to make themselves instruments in the hands of desperate politicians seeking to subvert democracy and impose control over Africa’s largest democracy,” the statement read.

The caucus noted that while Justice James Omotosho refused to grant the restraining order requested by the plaintiffs, he nonetheless declared that any party actions in preparation for the National Convention during the pendency of the suit would be null and void. According to PDP lawmakers, such pronouncements could embolden anti-democratic elements determined to obstruct the party’s democratic processes.

“These rulings clearly provide cover for those who wish to prevent the PDP National Convention from taking place, thereby hindering the party’s ability to present candidates for the 2027 elections,” the statement added.

The caucus emphasized that the survival of Nigeria’s democracy depends on the independence, integrity, and impartiality of the judiciary. They urged the NJC to ensure that no court becomes a tool for subverting the will of the people or destabilizing political institutions.
