The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has lauded the admission of the National Association of Judges in Nigeria (NAJN) as a member of the International Association of Judges (IAJ).

In a statement signed by her media aide, Mr. Tobi Soniyi, the CJN disclosed that NAJN, which will represent Nigeria at the global judicial body, was officially admitted during the 67th annual meeting of the IAJ, currently taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Justice Kekere-Ekun said the admission signifies global recognition and confidence in the Nigerian judiciary, noting that Nigeria has now become the 93rd member of the association.

Before admitting NAJN, the IAJ reportedly considered some of the challenges facing the Nigerian judiciary but also acknowledged the ongoing reforms being implemented under the leadership of Justice Kekere-Ekun.

Reacting to Nigeria’s admission, the CJN described it as “a moment of pride and privilege for Nigeria to join this global community of judges dedicated to the rule of law, judicial independence, and the protection of human rights.”

“Nigeria embraces this membership with humility, commitment, and a deep sense of responsibility.
We recognize the values that this Association upholds, and we are determined to contribute actively to its mission.
We are committed to further strengthening the independence of our judiciary, upholding the rule of law, and ensuring the continued protection and promotion of human rights in our country,” she added.

The International Association of Judges (IAJ) was founded in Salzburg, Austria, in 1953. It is a professional, non-political, international organization that brings together national associations of judges—not individual judges—approved by its Central Council for membership.

The primary aim of the association is to safeguard the independence of the judiciary, which it views as essential to guaranteeing human rights and freedom.

The organization currently comprises 92 national associations or representative groups from five continents. With Nigeria’s admission, that number has now risen to 93.

The Central Council serves as the IAJ’s executive body, with each member association represented by two delegates. The Council meets annually, preferably in a different country each year.

At the Taipei Central Council meeting in September 2023, Mr. Duro Sessa, a judge from Croatia, was elected President of the IAJ for a two-year term, while Mr. Giacomo Oberto, a judge of the Civil Court in Turin, was confirmed as Secretary-General for a sixth term.

The association holds consultative status with the United Nations, particularly with the International Labour Office, the UN Economic and Social Council, and the Council of Europe.
