The FCT Police Command has provided a detailed account of the tragic events leading to the death of ARISE TV anchor Somtochukwu “Sommie” Maduagwu during an armed robbery at Unique Apartment in Katampe.
According to Ajao Adewale, Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, the incident occurred on Monday when a group of armed robbers gained access to the three-story, 18-flat building where Sommie resided. Two private security personnel were on duty at the time, and one of them bravely confronted the intruders but was shot during the encounter.
Describing the panic that ensued, Adewale said, “Sommie occupied an apartment on the topmost floor, and out of fear, she jumped from the third story. The consequences are what we have seen very sad and unfortunate.”
The commissioner confirmed that police officers responded immediately to a distress call and found Sommie unconscious on the ground. She was rushed to Maitama General Hospital, where medical personnel attempted resuscitation using CPR, but tragically, she could not be saved.
A full-scale investigation has been launched, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Investigations, with all tactical resources deployed to unravel the case and track down the suspects. Adewale assured that “no stone will be left unturned to ensure that the perpetrators are apprehended and justice is served.”
He also extended condolences to Sommie’s family, the ARISE TV community, and all Nigerians affected by the incident, reaffirming that the results of the investigation will be publicly disclosed.
