Two men, Ezema Onyedikachi, 27, and Ugwu Chigozie Anthony, 21, have been arraigned in court and remanded in a correctional facility for the alleged stabbing and murder of 29-year-old Chiebonam Nweze during a bonfire event at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).

The Faculty of Arts, Department of Archaeology/Heritage Studies, had organised the bonfire night on September 12, 2025, which was attended by students and invited guests, including the deceased and the suspects.

UNN management alleged that the event was infiltrated by miscreants from a neighbouring community, who instigated violence. The incident escalated at around 3 a.m. the following day when Ugwu Anthony’s vehicle collided lightly with the deceased’s car, sparking an altercation that was temporarily resolved.

Investigations revealed that the suspects later conspired, returned armed with a dagger, and fatally stabbed Chiebonam Nweze in the chest. He was rushed to the University Medical Centre but was pronounced dead upon arrival. The dagger used in the attack was recovered.

The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, described the incident as both “unfortunate and avoidable,” extending condolences to the family of the deceased. He urged citizens, particularly youths, to avoid violence, exercise self-control, and resolve disputes peacefully.
