The Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, representing Abia South, to publicly deny or confirm his alleged association with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), warning that failure to do so would attract disciplinary action.

The ultimatum was contained in a statement released Tuesday night after the party’s caucus meeting in Umuahia, signed by its Publicity Secretary, Chukwuemeka Nwokoro.

APGA accused the former Senate Minority Leader of sidelining the party since securing his fifth term at the National Assembly on its platform, while allegedly promoting ADC at political gatherings.

According to the statement, Senator Abaribe held meetings on August 18 and September 23 at his NOBIK Event Centre in Aba, where he allegedly canvassed support for ADC. The party further cited a radio broadcast in which the Abia ADC Secretary claimed that Abaribe was a card-carrying member and leader of ADC in the state — an assertion the senator has yet to deny.

“Extant laws governing political party membership in Nigeria forbid a person to belong to two different political parties at the same time, thus, Senator Abaribe cannot belong to APGA and ADC at the same time,” APGA said.

The party demanded that Abaribe issue a rebuttal across both print and electronic media platforms within 24 hours or face “prompt disciplinary actions” as provided in the APGA constitution.

In response, Abaribe’s media aide, Uchenna Awom, dismissed the ultimatum as unnecessary, describing it as being based on unverified rumours. He argued that the party had all channels to directly reach the senator, whom it acknowledges as its leader in Abia.

“Senator Abaribe is alive. As APGA leader in Abia, the party has all the channels to access him. He doesn’t have any issues with them. They should write him and personally hear from him,” Awom said.

When asked if Abaribe had defected to ADC, the aide replied: “As an experienced politician, he knows how to go about it. Has he communicated to them that he has left APGA? They don’t just sit down and do arm-twisting to get words from his mouth.”

Senator Abaribe was first elected to the Senate in 2007 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where he won re-election in 2011, 2015, and 2019. In 2023, he defected to APGA, securing another term in the Red Chamber.
