A Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting in Jabi has sentenced a former legislative aide and banker, Goni Yilkan, to eight years’ imprisonment for obtaining ₦120.58 million under false pretence.
Justice F. E. Messiri, who delivered the judgment on Monday, found Yilkan guilty of a two-count charge bordering on employment scam. The conviction was disclosed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in a statement on Tuesday.
According to the EFCC, Yilkan, a native of Nguru, Yobe State, was convicted under Section 1(1)(a) and punishable under Section 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act, 2006. The court held that he would serve eight years in prison without an option of fine.
Yilkan was arraigned in October 2023 alongside Mohammed Adamu following investigations into a petition filed by one Mrs. Hindatu Bello, who accused him of defrauding her.
The charge sheet revealed that Yilkan and others at large obtained ₦120.58 million from Bello between January 2020 and December 2021 on the pretext of securing jobs in federal agencies, including the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
The EFCC said Bello, relying on Yilkan’s false claims, collected varying sums from over 60 jobseekers and remitted them to the convict. However, the purported employment never materialised, prompting her petition to the commission.
During trial, the prosecution, led by Cosmas Ugwu, presented six witnesses and documentary evidence, while the defence, led by J. A. Oguche, called two witnesses, including the convict himself.
In his ruling, Justice Messiri held that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt. While Yilkan was convicted, his co-defendant Adamu was discharged and acquitted.
The judgment comes amid EFCC’s continuing clampdown on fraudulent practices. On Monday, the commission’s Ilorin Zonal Directorate announced the arrest of 28 suspected internet fraudsters during sting operations in parts of Kwara State.
