Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested a notorious armed robber, alleged hired assassin, and suspected murderer, identified as John Samuel, 28, from Akwa Ibom State. The suspect was tracked to his hideout in Epe on Friday, September 19, following an intelligence-led operation.

According to the Command’s Deputy Spokesperson, DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi, Samuel, who was recently released from prison after serving a six-year jail term for armed robbery, had on August 18 attacked and shot a businessman, Gbenga Obama, in Allen Avenue, Ikeja. The victim was robbed of an expensive gold necklace and other valuables in broad daylight.

“John Samuel, an ex-convict, is notorious for armed robbery, assassination, and the murder of some of his victims. After his release from prison, he returned to crime with even more viciousness. He is known to shoot his victims before dispossessing them of valuables,” Oluseyi said.

CCTV footage from the August 18 incident showed the suspect firing an English pistol at the victim before stealing his jewelry, while his accomplice waited on a motorcycle for their escape. The victim sustained serious gunshot wounds but has since been treated and discharged.

Oluseyi added that Samuel confessed to selling the stolen jewelry for ₦4 million, far below its actual value. He further disclosed that efforts are ongoing to apprehend other members of the gang.

“They will all be prosecuted upon completion of investigation,” the statement read.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Olohudare Jimoh, commended the operatives for their gallantry and assured Lagos residents that discreet investigations are ongoing to ensure justice is served.
