The Ogun State Government has sealed five Chinese companies in the Ogere area of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway after their workers allegedly attacked law enforcement officers and state officials.

The affected firms are DL Plastics Limited, Dyschenghan Plastics, SH Agricultural Limited, Beautiful Fibre Limited, and Jincaicai Nigeria Limited.

Our correspondent gathered on Thursday that the companies had ignored several invitations by the Ogun State Waste Management Authority over alleged environmental violations.

Trouble began, according to a statement by the agency on Thursday, when enforcement teams visited the premises on Wednesday, only to be reportedly assaulted by workers.

The attack was said to have caused “bodily harm to law enforcement officers and state government officials while performing their official assignment.”

Confirming the action on Thursday, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment and Managing Director of OGWAMA, Abayomi Hunye, said the companies had a long record of defiance.

“We have been on this case for the past six months. We sent letters to them and invited them to defend themselves, but they refused to honour our invitation.

“Aside from these letters, our officials visited them several times, but they refused to allow them in,” Hunye explained.

According to him, the government had no choice but to act.

“After all these efforts proved abortive, we pasted notices of intention to seal their premises, especially on their main gates.

“They still refused to comply, so last Thursday, our officials sealed them by locking their gates. To our surprise, they not only removed the government’s seal but also broke the chains used to lock them.”

Hunye said a follow-up enforcement, accompanied by law enforcement agents, was violently resisted.

“They were met with a mob attack by their workers, who assaulted and inflicted bodily harm on law enforcement officers and state government officials, who had to be rushed to the hospital.

“This was not only to prevent them from carrying out their lawful duties but also with the intent to harm them,” he said.

The OGWAMA boss condemned the conduct of the companies, describing it as “barbaric.”

He added, “What is even more annoying is that these companies have not only constituted themselves into an environmental nuisance but also had the effrontery to assault and inflict bodily harm on government officials without considering the grave implications.

“The Ogun State Government will not fold its hands and watch a few recalcitrant companies and their nationals carry out such dastardly acts under the pretext of investing in the state.

“Anyone caught will be prosecuted under the law of the land,” Hunye declared.

The government’s action forms part of its ongoing clampdown on companies accused of violating Ogun State’s environmental laws.

In May, six other firms were similarly sealed over various infractions. They include Winwin Electrical Limited, Isichei Farms Limited, Chafengei Nigeria Limited, Fortune Height Farms Limited, Loly B and DA Ventures Limited, and Adventus Nigeria Limited.
