Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has defended Israel’s recent airstrike on Qatar, asserting that the Gulf state harbors and finances Hamas leaders, providing them with luxury residences. Netanyahu’s remarks came in a short video statement released ahead of the 9/11 remembrance.

“We remember September 11th  the day Islamist terrorists committed the worst savagery on American soil since the founding of the United States. We also have September 11th for us: October 7, when Islamist terrorists committed the worst savagery against the Jewish people since the Holocaust,” Netanyahu said.

The Prime Minister compared Israel’s action to the U.S. pursuit of Al-Qaeda leaders after 9/11, arguing that nations should expel or prosecute terrorists, or face Israeli retaliation. “We went after the terrorist masterminds who committed the October 7 massacre in Qatar, which gives safe haven. It harbors terrorists, finances Hamas, and gives terrorists chieftains sumptuous villas. We have done exactly what America did after 9/11,” he declared.

Netanyahu criticized international condemnation of the strike, calling it a display of double standards. “What did the world do after the Americans took out Osama Bin Laden? They applauded. They should applaud Israel for upholding the same principles,” he added.

The airstrike on Tuesday targeted Hamas leadership headquarters in Doha, drawing widespread international criticism. Qatar’s Prime Minister, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani, accused Israel of undermining stability and peace by attacking Hamas leaders on Qatari soil.

Netanyahu issued a stern warning to Qatar and other nations alleged to harbor terrorists: “Expel them, or bring them to justice. Otherwise, we will do it ourselves,” emphasizing Israel’s commitment to pursuing its enemies “wherever they hide.”

The Israeli leader stressed that the strike was a direct response to the October 7 attacks and framed it as part of Israel’s broader fight against terrorism, drawing parallels to the U.S. response to Al-Qaeda following 9/11.
