The U.S. Justice Department filed a lawsuit on Thursday against Uber Technologies, accusing the ride-hailing company of discriminating against passengers with disabilities.

The government is seeking an injunction, monetary damages, and a civil penalty for alleged violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The complaint filed in federal court in Northern California said Uber drivers often failed to accommodate riders who use service animals or stowable wheelchairs.

According to Bloomberg, Uber has faced similar claims before. In 2021, the company agreed to pay more than $2 million and change its policies after the Justice Department said it charged discriminatory fees to riders with disabilities.

Uber, however, disputed the latest allegation, stating that β€œRiders who use guide dogs or other assistive devices deserve a safe, respectful, and welcoming experience on Uber β€” full stop,” an Uber spokesperson said. β€œWe have a clear zero-tolerance policy for confirmed service denials.”

The spokesperson added that every driver β€œmust acknowledge and agree to comply” with Uber’s U.S. service animal policy and all relevant accessibility laws before using the driver app. When violations are confirmed, the company takes β€œdecisive action,” including permanent account deactivation, he said.

The Justice Department also said that after being told of the investigation, Uber added an optional feature to let riders alert drivers in advance if they will be traveling with a service animal.
