Former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has raised alarm over what he described as a coordinated plot to destabilise Kebbi State through the importation of political thugs, foreign mercenaries, and illegal arms trafficking.
In a petition dated September 10, 2025, and addressed to the National Security Adviser, the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of the Department of State Services, and the Comptroller-Generals of Immigration and Civil Defence, Malami accused powerful political actors of sponsoring security threats in the state.
According to a statement on Thursday by his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mohammad Doka, the former AGF, who also leads the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kebbi, alleged that some politicians were collaborating with foreign mercenaries from Niger Republic and arming them through illegal channels.
“The alleged operatives are being deployed to intimidate citizens, suppress opposition voices, and disrupt peace in Kebbi. This threat is backed by credible intelligence and personal experience,” Malami said.
He cited an alleged attack on himself and other indigenes by armed thugs on September 1, 2025, claiming his convoy in Birnin Kebbi was attacked, leaving about 10 vehicles vandalised and several supporters injured.
Malami described the incident as “painful and unfortunate,” alleging that the attackers operated from the ruling APC’s state headquarters.
The APC, however, denied involvement. Its spokesman, Isa Assalafy, dismissed the allegation, saying: “No government that enjoys the massive support of the people and is confident of victory in 2027 would want the peace of the state disrupted,” while accusing security operatives in Malami’s convoy of firing shots.
The petition further accused some political figures in Kebbi of maintaining covert ties with the terrorist network known as Lakurawa. Malami described the development as “a national security emergency” that transcends local politics and poses a direct threat to Nigeria’s sovereignty.
He urged the NSA and other security chiefs to coordinate inter-agency efforts, secure border communities against infiltration, and probe the alleged collusion between state officials and terrorist elements.
