The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has dismissed as “null and void” the purported expulsion of Hon. Abdulmumin Jibrin Kofa, who represents Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency in Kano State.

In a statement made available to newsmen in Abeokuta on Saturday, the National Secretary of the party, Comrade Oginni Olaposi Sunday, said the expulsion was pronounced by a former and expelled State Chairman of the NNPP, Hashim Sulaiman Dungurawa, who has no standing to make such a decision.

Oginni described the move as “a joke taken too far,” noting that Dungurawa is no longer a member of the party and therefore lacks the authority to expel any serving member. He added that previous rulings by the FCT High Court (April 3, 2025) and the Abia State High Court confirmed the expulsion of Dungurawa and others, including Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, further undermining Dungurawa’s claims.

Oginni also suggested that Senator Kwankwaso might be behind efforts to discredit Jibrin after failing to secure concessions from the President before his move to the APC. He warned that blind loyalty from Kano Governor Abba Yusuf to Kwankwaso should not compromise the NNPP’s prospects in the 2027 governorship election, urging reconciliation with the party’s leadership in Lagos.

Earlier, the Kano State chapter of the NNPP had announced Jibrin’s expulsion, citing alleged anti-party activities. State Chairman Dungurawa claimed the lawmaker had repeatedly attacked the party in the media and that his electoral victory owed more to the Kwankwasiyya movement than to his personal political strength.

Responding to the expulsion, Jibrin described it as “a rude shock,” arguing that the interviews cited by the party both in English and Hausa were consistent with NNPP’s values. “I strongly believe the contents of the interview should not warrant such a heavy penalty,” he said.

He added that no invitation was extended to him to defend himself, stating, “Even under military dictatorship, an accused is subjected to a court martial.”

While expressing disappointment, Jibrin said he accepted the party’s decision to avoid unnecessary conflict but criticized NNPP’s internal processes and lack of recognition for members’ contributions. He denied claims of defaulting on dues and promised to settle any legitimate invoices promptly.

Jibrin added that, although he would have preferred to remain in the NNPP, he had no option but to accept the decision. “But for the respect I have for the party, its members and leaders, I would have viewed this action as null and void, as it failed to follow due process. I would rather wish the party well and go in peace. I beg the party to allow me also go in peace.”

On allegations that he had defaulted on his dues, Jibrin denied the claim and urged the party to issue him an invoice, which he promised to settle promptly. He also criticised the NNPP for its lack of appreciation of members’ contributions.

“The party does not believe anybody has political value or deserves respect at various levels. I am grateful to Almighty Allah for whatever value I have, no matter how little. I would rather invest it where it will be appreciated with dignity,” he added.
