Former Governor of Sokoto State and Senator representing Sokoto South, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has expressed strong support for President Bola Tinubu’s push for the establishment of state police while also declaring his full commitment to opposition efforts to unseat the president in 2027.

Speaking on Friday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives painted a grim picture of the security situation in Sokoto State, particularly in his senatorial district.
“They have almost taken over every local government in Sokoto South and Sokoto East. As I speak with you, Shagari Local Government has been evacuated the villagers have fled and the terrorists are in charge. The same thing is happening in Tureta, Bodinga and other areas,” Tambuwal said.
On the state police debate, he dismissed fears of political misuse, stressing that Nigeria’s peculiar security challenges demand urgent reforms. “I am no longer a governor but I support state police. When you post someone from Sokoto to Enugu, he doesn’t understand the terrain or the language. We need more boots on the ground in the police and the army,” he said.
He added that state police must be accompanied by mass recruitment, improved welfare, and modern equipment for security personnel. “When a personnel gets killed in the field, what happens to their families? Welfare should go beyond the personnel alone,” he noted.
On the political front, Tambuwal made it clear that he is fully involved in the opposition coalition’s plan to democratically remove Tinubu from office in 2027.
“I am fully involved in a process — democratically and lawfully — that will end, by the grace of God, in sending this government out of office. With the help of God and Nigeria, we will send these people out of office,” he declared.
Dismissing suggestions that the African Democratic Congress (ADC)-led coalition is a northern agenda, he argued that it is a national front. “Is Peter Obi from Northern Nigeria? Is Aregbesola not from Osun State? What are you telling me? Are they not all part of the coalition?” he asked.
Tambuwal insisted that Tinubu is beatable if the opposition unites behind a single candidate. “It will be easier for the opposition to form an alliance to defeat Tinubu. But if Atiku, Jonathan, Peter Obi, Kwankwaso, and Amaechi run individually, it will be easy for Tinubu to win,” he warned.
While refusing to disclose his preferred presidential candidate, Tambuwal hinted at his leanings. “When it comes to leadership of this country and leadership of the people, tomorrow, not even today, I would rather support Atiku than Nyesom Wike,” he said, stressing that his political choices are guided by principles and not personal ties.
He also distanced himself from allegations by former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai that the Tinubu administration was paying bandits. “I am not aware. I do not know. I cannot claim to know that bandits are being paid by anyone,” he stated.
The senator reiterated that he remains a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and expressed hope that opposition parties, including the PDP and ADC, will work together to reclaim power in 2027.
