Following earlier reports of unrest in Balogun Market on Lagos Island, the Lagos State Government has confirmed that normalcy has been restored in the commercial hub.

Jubril Gawat, Senior Special Assistant on New Media to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, stated on X that Balogun, Martins, Oluwole, Breadfruit streets, and adjoining areas are calm, with security personnel fully deployed to maintain peace.

He shared images showing officers of the Nigeria Police Force, including Divisional Police Officers from Lion Building and Adeniji Adele stations, alongside operatives of the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC), patrolling the market area.

Gawat added that community leaders are actively engaging traders and residents to prevent any further escalation. While some shops remain closed, many have reopened, and vehicular movement within and around the market is reportedly smooth.

The reassurance comes after earlier clashes between traders in the market prompted the deployment of additional security personnel. Efforts to obtain comments from the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, were unsuccessful.
