Miss Elohor Jennifer Edema, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, has publicly recounted the traumatic assault she endured at the hands of operatives from the Agunechemba Vigilante Group, also known as Operation Udo Ga-Achi, in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The incident, which occurred on July 23, 2025, and gained widespread attention after a viral video surfaced on August 19, 2025, has sparked nationwide outrage and renewed calls for justice and accountability in Nigeria’s security operations.

In a heartfelt statement shared via a video posted on X on August 21, 2025, Elohor detailed the harrowing events of that evening. She described how, around 5:00 p.m., aggressive knocking at the corps members’ lodge in a three-story building initially led her and her colleagues to suspect a neighbor was being targeted. The knocking grew louder and more forceful, prompting Elohor to investigate.

Upon opening the door, she was confronted by an armed man wielding a gun, dressed in plain clothes with no uniform or identification. “At first, I was afraid it was an armed robber until I heard him say, ‘All of you outside,’” Elohor recounted. She mustered the courage to inform the man that everyone in the room was an NYSC corps member, stating, “All of us here are corps members.” Despite presenting their NYSC identification cards and uniforms, the situation escalated.

Elohor explained that the operative, later identified as part of the Agunechemba Vigilante Group, demanded they step outside without explaining why. When her colleagues emerged to question the situation, the operatives grew hostile, threatening to smash their phones if they attempted to contact anyone. “He beat me, tore the clothes on my body,” Elohor said, her voice trembling. She noted that approximately five operatives were involved, one of whom struck a colleague with an iron rod for pleading on her behalf. The viral video, shared by the Haven 360 Foundation, captured Elohor being physically assaulted, stripped partially unclad, and left bloodied, prompting widespread condemnation.

The incident, which occurred during a joint security operation targeting suspected cultists, has been widely criticized as a gross violation of human rights. The Haven 360 Foundation condemned the assault, stating, “The victims were subjected to unsavoury, horrible, sexually degrading words and actions, including threats of sexual violation.” The foundation demanded the immediate arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators, alongside compensation for Elohor and other victims.

The Anambra State Government responded swiftly, announcing on August 19, 2025, that the implicated operatives had been sacked and handed over to the police for prosecution. The Special Adviser to Governor Charles Soludo on Community Security, Ken Emeakayi, condemned the operatives’ actions as “unacceptable” and affirmed their detention pending legal action.

The NYSC, in a statement issued on August 19, 2025, described the attack as “unacceptable and dehumanising,” pledging support for ongoing police investigations to ensure justice. The Legal Assistance and Citizens Rights Initiative (LACRI) also called for a public apology and compensation, urging reforms to regulate vigilante groups operating outside the rule of law.

Elohor’s bravery in sharing her story has amplified calls for justice. The Anambra State Police Command, as stated by SP Tochukwu Ikenga, has identified the suspects but noted that Elohor’s temporary unavailability has delayed investigations. Dr. Nonye Soludo, Anambra’s First Lady, personally reached out to Elohor, inviting her to the Government House, though Elohor was out of state at the time.
