The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has condemned the assault of one of its members, Miss Jennifer Elohor, by operatives of a state-controlled vigilante group in Anambra, describing the act as “ridiculous” and unacceptable.

The incident, which occurred on August 19 at a corps members’ lodge in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area, sparked outrage after a viral video showed operatives of the Agunechemba security outfit invading the residence and accusing corps members of being internet fraudsters.

In the footage, one of the operatives was seen hitting Elohor, tearing her clothes in the process and leaving her partially unclad as she cried for help. The video has since drawn widespread condemnation on social media, with Nigerians demanding justice.

In a statement, NYSC clarified that Elohor was not a resident of the lodge but was visiting at the time of the raid. The agency said its findings showed that the operatives stormed the premises alleging illegal activities, a claim it said “has not been substantiated.”

“The operatives demanded that every occupant of the lodge should submit themselves for a search, while Corps Member Edema Elohor Jennifer, AN/24C/0626, who was on a visit to the lodge, was assaulted,” the statement read.

NYSC said the matter has been reported to the police and assured that investigations and necessary actions are ongoing. It restated its “strong commitment to the welfare and security of corps members nationwide,” stressing that it would not tolerate any act that undermines their safety.

The agency further appealed to the public to support the protection of corps members across their places of primary assignment and host communities.

Reacting to the incident, Ken Emeakayi, Special Adviser on Community Security to Governor Chukwuma Soludo, described the assault as “unfortunate and unacceptable.” He explained that the operatives were chasing suspected cultists who ran into a residential compound, but ended up brutalizing the corps member.

The state police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, also confirmed the arrest of the security operatives involved. He condemned the assault but noted that the temporary unavailability of the victim had stalled investigations. Ikenga reassured corps members serving in Anambra of the command’s commitment to their safety and urged them to promptly report any cases of harassment or abuse.

The Anambra government has since promised disciplinary action, while the victim has been invited by the state First Lady, Dr. Nonye Soludo, who pledged support and sympathy over the incident.
