The Commissioner in charge of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Monitoring Team in Abuja, Akin Fakorede, has come under fire for allegedly disregarding directives from IGP Kayode Egbetokun and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, regarding the ownership tussle at River Park Estate.

Fakorede is accused of issuing a letter recognizing Paulo Homes Nigeria Limited as the rightful owner of the estate, a move critics say preempted the work of the ministerial committee recently inaugurated by Wike to investigate the dispute.

The IGP had in July ordered a fresh probe into the long-running ownership crisis after meeting with the parties involved at the Force Headquarters on July 2. At the meeting, Egbetokun reportedly clarified that the police had no mandate to adjudicate land or company ownership disputes, stressing that such matters remain within the jurisdiction of the courts.

Findings indicate that the Special Investigation Panel (SIP) had earlier submitted a report contradicting conclusions previously reached by Fakorede’s unit.

However, in a letter referenced IGP MONITORING UNIT/ABJ/VOL.79/25, dated August 7, Fakorede directed the Director of Land Administration to henceforth channel all dealings on River Park Estate through Paulo Homes Nigeria Limited. Copies of the letter were also sent to the Abuja Geographic Information System (AGIS), the Director of Development Control, and the company’s owner, Dr. Sampson Peter Odili.

The letter was reportedly written just days after the inauguration of the ministerial committee, raising concerns that it could undermine the panel’s work, especially as Wike had earlier warned the committee to insulate itself from vested interests.

The development comes as the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, is said to be reviewing the dispute. He reportedly directed the police to suspend further actions on the matter until the review is concluded.
