At least 16 inmates escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Keffi, Nasarawa State, in the early hours of Tuesday, the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) has confirmed.

In a statement, NCS spokesperson Umar Abubakar said the inmates breached the facility’s security and attacked personnel on duty to facilitate their escape. Seven of the escapees have since been recaptured.

“Some inmates breached the security of the facility and attacked personnel on duty to compromise the situation, enabling sixteen (16) inmates to escape custody,” Abubakar said. He added that five staff members were injured during the incident, with two sustaining serious injuries and currently receiving urgent medical care.

The Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, has ordered a thorough investigation into the jailbreak and warned that no staff found culpable will be spared disciplinary action. He has also directed an immediate search operation in collaboration with other security agencies to recapture the remaining fugitives.

The NCS urged the public to stay calm, be vigilant, and report any suspicious activities or sightings of the escapees to the nearest security authorities.

This incident adds to a series of recent prison breaks across Nigeria, including previous escapes in Abuja, Oyo, and Benin.

The Nigerian Correctional Service reassured the public of its commitment to ensuring safety and maintaining strict security in custodial facilities nationwide.
