The Choba Magistrate Court in Port Harcourt has instructed all lawyers appearing before the court to check their blood pressure (BP) every morning before court proceedings begin. The court has even made provisions to provide BP readings daily.

The notice, signed by the court, states that failure to comply will result in the lawyer not being heard during the sitting. It also outlines additional requirements before lawyers can be heard, including proper dress code, possession of case files, and familiarity with the Evidence Act, the Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL), and court rules.

This unusual order has sparked mixed reactions among legal practitioners and observers across Nigeria. Some lawyers have described the directive as “funny” or “unusual,” questioning the legal basis for such a health-related prerequisite in court proceedings.

However, others view the measure as a pragmatic attempt by the court to ensure that lawyers maintain good health and are mentally and physically fit to handle often stressful litigation, which can impact the quality of justice delivery.

A Lawyer and commentator, Okeke,Esq noted, “While the directive may seem odd on the surface, it a deeper concern for wellness in the profession. Lawyers operate under high stress, and ensuring they are medically fit before arguing cases might enhance court efficiency.”

Yet, some lawyers have expressed concerns about the possible infringement on professional rights and the practicality of enforcing such a rule uniformly.
