Heavily armed men on Friday ambushed a commercial bus and abducted nine passengers at Ogbabo Junction along the Itobe Anyigba Road in Kogi State.

Our correspondent gathered that the driver of the vehicle and six other passengers narrowly escaped the attack.

The incident occurred at about 4:20 p.m. near Ogbabo Junction in Ofu Local Government Area. The gunmen, who had laid an ambush, stormed the expressway upon sighting the passenger-loaded Toyota bus, owned by Peace Mass Transit.

They forced the bus to a halt and fired sporadically into the air to scare the passengers. However, the driver, identified as Mr. Sunday Okechi, managed to outsmart the attackers and fled into the bush with six passengers.

Nine others were not as fortunate and were marched into the forest by the assailants. The scene of the abduction was barely 300 meters from a military checkpoint along the Ogbabo–Ochadamu Road.

Security operatives later arrived at the scene and found the abandoned bus, with registration number ENZ-55 XS, alongside a blue Toyota Carina ‘E’.

A joint team of security agencies, including the Vigilante Group of Nigeria and local hunters, has since launched a search-and-rescue operation.

Confirming the incident, Kogi State Police Command spokesperson, SP Williams Ovye Aya, said efforts were ongoing to free the victims and apprehend the perpetrators.

“Yes, we are in touch with our men. The Command is making efforts in collaboration with the military, vigilantes and hunters to rescue the victims and arrest the criminals,” he stated.
