The Nasarawa State Police Command has refuted claims that over 30 female students of the Federal University, Lafia were raped during a recent bandit attack on campus.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Ramhan Nansel, newsmen on Tuesday that investigations into the incident revealed the reports to be false.

“That report is false. Bandits entered the school and raped over 30 female students? Our findings show that this report is not true,” Nansel stated.

He explained that the police contacted the university’s Chief Security Officer, the information officer, and several students, none of whom confirmed any such incident.

“We spoke with the Chief Security Officer and the information officer of the institution, and they said there was no reported incident of that nature. We also talked to some students who denied that anything like that happened. If it had truly happened, the students would be vocal about it,” Nansel added.

According to the police, the incident that took place on July 27 involved a robbery in the student village area. Items stolen included a cellphone, a power bank, and a handbag belonging to a student named Jennifer. One male student was injured while attempting to escape. There was no report of rape.

“Over 30 female students raped? Haba! If such an incident had occurred, there would be no need to hide it; we are ready to investigate and respond,” Nansel emphasized.

Also addressing the rumors, a verified student leader on social media platform X, identified as @deehsarasheed, condemned the report as fake and misleading.

He clarified that the attack happened in the student village—not the main hostel—and involved several cases of robbery.

“Only one student was raped, and that was because she was found naked after the criminals broke into her room. She herself stated that she was laying naked,” the student leader explained.

He further noted that the school’s hostels, especially the female hostels, have heavy security presence at all times, making attacks there highly unlikely.

“The school has four female hostels and one male hostel. I am a student and among the student leaders,” he added.

The police and university authorities continue to appeal for accurate information and urge the public to disregard unverified claims that could cause panic and unrest.
