Former Arsenal and Ghana international footballer Thomas Partey has been granted conditional bail after appearing before Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London on charges of rape and sexual assault.

The 32-year-old midfielder is facing six serious charges five counts of rape involving two women, and one count of sexual assault involving a third woman. The alleged offences occurred between 2021 and 2022, during Partey’s time at the Premier League club.

Partey was formally charged on July 4, just four days after his contract with Arsenal expired on June 30. Reports have since linked him with a potential move to Spanish side Villarreal.

Dressed in a black zip-neck jumper, Partey stood silently in the dock, showing no emotion as the charges were read. He was not required to enter pleas at Tuesday’s hearing.

His lawyer, Jenny Wiltshire, reiterated that Partey “denies all the charges against him” and is eager to “finally clear his name” through due legal process.

Under the terms of his bail, Partey is prohibited from contacting the three women involved and must inform police of any permanent change of address or international travel. Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring noted during proceedings: “I understand he’s no longer employed in this country and playing in Spain now.”

Partey is scheduled to appear next at the Old Bailey on September 2.

The case has reignited criticism from supporters over Arsenal’s handling of the matter. A spokesperson for Arsenal Supporters Against Sexual Violence, Honor Barber, expressed disappointment, stating: “We never wanted to be in a situation where the club that we love… was playing, week-in, week-out, a player who is now facing court appearances on six counts of sexual violence.”

The group has called on Arsenal to publicly release their sexual violence policies, suspend players under investigation for such offences, and provide support to survivors.

British police confirmed they first received a report of alleged rape in February 2022.

Partey joined Arsenal from Atlético Madrid in a £45 million move in October 2020. He made 167 appearances for the North London club, scoring nine goals, including four last season. On the international stage, he has earned 51 caps for Ghana.

An Arsenal spokesperson stated that Partey’s contract ended on June 30 and that the club is unable to comment due to ongoing legal proceedings.
