The Benue State Government has launched a drone-enabled surveillance service to enhance emergency response and monitor developments across communities and Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps throughout the state.

This was disclosed on Monday by the Executive Secretary of the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BSEMA), James Iorpuu, during the unveiling of the state’s new electronic emergency management system in Makurdi.

According to Iorpuu, the initiative was developed in collaboration with Benue Digital Infrastructure Company PLC and is aimed at providing real-time situational awareness in disaster-prone areas and IDP locations.

“BSEMA, with the technical expertise of Benue Digital Infrastructure Company PLC, has now introduced drone surveillance services for capturing real-time emergency response images and videos across affected communities, including activities within all IDP camps,” he said.

The SEMA boss explained that the drone-generated situational reports would be published regularly on BSEMA’s digital platforms to promote transparency, ensure accountability, and enhance the speed of emergency interventions and partnerships.

“This platform is built for you, powered by you, and with your support, we shall overcome emergency challenges in our dear State,” Iorpuu stated.

He urged residents, diaspora communities, humanitarian organisations, and stakeholders to adopt and engage with the official digital channels, while warning against politically motivated misinformation.

Iorpuu noted that the initiative positions Benue as a trailblazer in digital emergency management in Nigeria, pledging that the state’s new approach would result in a smarter, faster, and more collaborative emergency response mechanism.

“As we commission the Benue E-Emergency Platforms today, we proudly position Benue as the undisputed pioneer in digital emergency management in Nigeria,” he added.
