The Nigeria Police Force has summoned human rights activist and Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, over allegations of forgery and inciting public disturbance.

In an invitation letter dated August 1, Sowore was directed to appear for questioning on Monday, August 4, at the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Monitoring Unit, Force Headquarters, Abuja. The letter, signed by Deputy Commissioner of Police Akin Fakorede, stated that the interview was in connection with a case reported on July 31.

“In view of the foregoing, and in the spirit of fair hearing, you are kindly requested to appear for an interview… to shed more light on the allegations,” the letter reads.

The police cited Section 53(2) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), 2025, as the legal basis for the invitation.

The development comes on the heels of Sowore’s active participation in the July 21 protest by retired police officers at the Force Headquarters, Abuja. The protest was held to demand improved retirement benefits and the removal of police personnel from the Contributory Pension Scheme, which the retirees say has left many destitute.

Sowore has since mobilised for a follow-up protest and alleged that his AI-powered Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses were stolen during the July 21 protest. In a video he shared online, the activist accused a police cameraman, Aku Victor Chiemere—reportedly attached to the office of Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi—of snatching the glasses.

Sowore said he had filed petitions to both the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) and the Asokoro Police Division, demanding the prosecution of Mr Chiemere and ACP Adejobi for alleged theft and official misconduct.

“This petition concerns the theft of my Ray-Ban AI-powered eyeglasses… stolen by Aku Victor Chiemere, a police cameraman working with the Force PPRO,” he wrote on social media. “We know it is a game!”

The police have yet to publicly respond to the theft allegations.

Sowore, a vocal critic of IGP Kayode Egbetokun—whom he routinely refers to as the “Illegal IGP”—believes the latest invitation is another attempt to silence him. In January, the police filed a 17-count cybercrime charge against him for calling Egbetokun “illegal” on social media, following a controversial extension of the IGP’s tenure approved by President Bola Tinubu.

Reacting to the latest police summons, Sowore declared his intention to honour the invitation while calling on supporters to accompany him.

“The illegal IGP… can’t stand the heat anymore. So he’s embarked again on another voyage… I will be there on Monday, and I’ll be inviting all our people in the revolutionary struggle to come with me. #EgbetokunMustGo,” he posted on Facebook.

The activist insists that instead of addressing the protesters’ demands and the alleged misconduct by police personnel, the authorities are resorting to harassment and intimidation.
