The Nigerian passport has slipped further down the global ranking, now positioned 88th on the 2025 Henley Passport Index, reflecting diminished travel freedom for Nigerian citizens. According to the latest data from Henley & Partners, Nigerian passport holders can access only 55 countries visa-free or with visa-on-arrival, underscoring ongoing challenges in international mobility.

This decline places Nigeria among the least powerful passports in Africa and worldwide, trailing behind regional peers and highlighting the restrictive nature of visa policies Nigerians face. Past reports have shown Nigeria’s ranking fluctuating between 91st and 94th in recent years, marking a steady downward trend.

Experts attribute the limited travel access to Nigeria’s strained diplomatic relations, economic instability, and a notably high visa rejection rate, particularly for Schengen visas, which stood at 45.1% in 2022. Professor Mehari Taddele Maru, in a Henley & Partners report, pointed out a “pre-determined bias” against African applicants in European visa systems, compounding the difficulties for Nigerian travelers.

In contrast, the top of the index remains dominated by countries like Singapore and Japan. Singapore holds the number one spot with visa-free access to 193 destinations worldwide, while Japan follows closely with access to 190 countries. Their passport strength is credited to robust diplomatic ties and strategic visa-waiver agreements, reflecting proactive foreign policies.

The Henley Passport Index also highlights a growing global mobility gap. For example, Singaporean citizens enjoy access to 169 more countries than holders of the Afghan passport, which ranks last with only 26 visa-free destinations. Nigeria’s declining rank aligns with similar downward trends experienced by nations such as Syria and Yemen, while others like China and the UAE have made significant gains through diplomatic efforts.

For Nigerian travelers, the passport’s limited power means increased costs and bureaucratic hurdles, affecting opportunities for business, education, and tourism abroad. Online discussions have voiced frustration over the passport’s ranking, urging the Nigerian government to prioritize diplomacy to negotiate more visa-free arrangements.
