The kidnappers of Justice Ebiyerin Omukoro, a judge of the Bayelsa State High Court, have been apprehended by the Bayelsa State Command of the Nigerian Police Force, Governor Senator Douye Diri announced on Wednesday during the State Executive Council meeting at Government House, Yenagoa.

Governor Diri disclosed that all those involved in the abduction have been arrested except the gang leader, who remains at large. He reiterated a stern warning to criminals to avoid Bayelsa, underscoring his administration’s zero-tolerance policy on crime.

Highlighting improvements in the state’s security architecture, the governor revealed that drones and CCTV cameras have been deployed across Yenagoa to aid crime-fighting efforts. “In the recent kidnapping of a serving judge, we secured his release unharmed. We provided logistics to security agencies, leading to the arrest of the perpetrators except one still at large. Bayelsa has zero tolerance for crime,” Diri said.

At the same meeting, Governor Diri honoured Superintendent of Police Sentome Obi, who notably rejected a $17,000 bribe from a suspect linked to organ harvesting. The governor praised SP Obi’s gallantry, integrity, and dedication to duty, describing him as a source of pride for Bayelsa and the Nigerian Police Force.

In recognition of his exemplary conduct, Governor Diri announced a reward package for SP Obi, including a three-bedroom flat and a vehicle. He also recommended the officer for promotion to the Inspector General of Police.

“At a time when the Nigerian Police is battling image challenges, SP Obi has proven that a good name is worth more than riches. His integrity has uplifted the Force’s reputation, and I urge other officers to emulate his example,” the governor stated.

Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Francis Idu, commended the government and people of the state for producing such a dedicated officer. He emphasized the need for continued investment in security infrastructure to safeguard lives and property.
