The All Progressives Congress (APC) has emerged victorious in the Lagos State local government elections held on Saturday, sweeping all 57 chairmanship positions across the 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).
The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), which announced the results on Sunday, also confirmed that the APC secured 375 out of 376 available councillorship seats.
However, in a surprising twist, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) clinched a rare win in Ward D of the Yaba LCDA, where its candidate, Babatunde Dosunmu, defeated his APC rival. Dosunmu, a former APC member who recently defected to the PDP, secured the opposition party’s only win in an otherwise dominant APC performance.
LASIEC noted that the election was largely peaceful, despite reports of voter apathy and logistical issues that affected early voting in some areas.
The newly elected chairmen and councillors are expected to be sworn in later this month.
Some of the confirmed chairmanship winners include:
Alimosho LGA: Akinpelu Ibrahim Johnson
Kosofe LGA: Barr. Moyosore Adedoyin Ogunlewe
Oshodi-Isolo LGA: Otunba Kehinde Almaroof-Oloyede
Surulere LGA: Sulaimon Yusuf Bamidele
Lagos Island LGA: Hon. Taiwo Oyekan
Eti-Osa East LCDA: Hon. John Campos Ogundare
Ikeja LGA: Akeem Dauda
Ikorodu LGA: Prince Adedayo Abdullateef Ladega
Epe LGA: Princess Surah Olayemi Animashaun
Amuwo-Odofin LGA: Prince Lanre Sanusi (PLS)
The commission is expected to publish full election details in the coming days, even as political observers continue to analyse the PDP’s symbolic win in Yaba and its implications for future electoral contests in Lagos.
