The Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) has suspended Abuja-based lawyer, Everestus Chinedum Ugwuowo, from legal practice in Nigeria for five years after finding him guilty of professional misconduct in a N29 million property fraud case.

The LPDC’s decision followed a petition of Infamous Conduct filed by Mrs. Grace Dauda, who accused Ugwuowo of collecting N29 million from her in 2017 under the pretense of selling a four-bedroom duplex located at House No. 11, 662 Road, Gwarinpa Estate, Abuja—a property he had no authority to sell.

In its Final Direction dated July 1, 2025, and delivered by a five-member panel led by Justice Ishaq Bello, former Chief Judge of the FCT and LPDC Chairman, the committee declared:

“We are satisfied that the proper order to make in the circumstances is to DIRECT as follows: That the Respondent, EVERESTUS CHINEDU UGWUOWO, ESQ. be and is hereby suspended from the Roll of Legal Practitioners and from engaging in the business of practicing law for a period of FIVE YEARS from the date of this DIRECTION.”

The LPDC further ordered Ugwuowo to refund the N29 million to Mrs. Dauda within 30 days.

Court documents revealed that Ugwuowo had acknowledged receipt of the payment in a letter dated September 14, 2017. However, he failed to deliver possession or title of the property to the buyer, and subsequently became evasive.

The property’s actual owner, Ciroma Muhammed Umar, also appeared before the panel and denied ever authorising Ugwuowo—or anyone else—to sell the property.

Relying on Ugwuowo’s credentials as a legal practitioner with over 15 years of experience and status as a notary public, Mrs. Dauda said she was misled into trusting the transaction’s legitimacy.

The committee held that Ugwuowo’s actions constituted infamous conduct in the course of legal practice and violated the standards of the profession. The panel concluded that his conduct “must be punished accordingly.”

In addition to the suspension and refund, the LPDC directed the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court to reflect the suspension on the Roll of Legal Practitioners. It also instructed that the ruling be brought to the attention of the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and other relevant regulatory bodies.
