Security operatives on Monday stormed the national secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Wadata Plaza in Abuja, and barred members of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) from holding their scheduled meeting, deepening the ongoing leadership crisis rocking the opposition party.

Armed personnel, acting on what was described as an “order from above”, locked down the party’s NEC Hall and other parts of the secretariat where the BoT was to convene. A senior security officer was overheard instructing his subordinates to ensure no meeting takes place in any part of the building.

“Make sure nobody is in the hall there. That is the instruction. I heard there is another hall upstairs. Make sure nobody is meeting there,” the officer reportedly said.

The BoT meeting, which was to precede the party’s expanded caucus and National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, was disrupted as BoT members, including Maina Chiroma and former National Secretary Umar Tsauri, were denied access to the premises. Tsauri told newsmen that the police had claimed they were acting on superior orders.

The action left many party elders visibly disturbed, with some seen discussing the development in hushed tones outside the premises before leaving in frustration.

Tension had been building in the PDP over internal divisions, particularly following the controversial 2023 presidential primaries. The latest battle over the rightful holder of the office of National Secretary has widened the rift, with acting National Chairman Ambassador Umar Damagum and Deputy National Chairman (South) Taofeek Arapaja reportedly leading opposing factions within the National Working Committee (NWC).

Journalists and staff members who were initially allowed into the premises were later ordered to vacate, while Dalaba Street, which leads to the Wadata Plaza, was cordoned off by the police.
