Two women have been confirmed dead and dozens of families displaced following a devastating flood in Wovi community, Damboa Local Government Area (LGA) of Borno State, with a separate windstorm wreaking havoc in Rumirgo, Askira-Uba LGA.

The flood also destroyed several homes in the affected communities, leaving residents homeless and in urgent need of assistance.

Spokesperson to Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, Dauda Iliya, disclosed the development in a statement on Tuesday, conveying the governor’s deep sympathy to the bereaved and affected families.

Governor Zulum, in his response, directed the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to immediately dispatch relief materials to the impacted communities.

“I received with profound sorrow the sad news of the devastating flood disaster in the Wovi community, which claimed the lives of two women, as well as the destruction of homes in Gumsuri, displacing many families,” Zulum said.

“Equally distressing is the windstorm in Rumirgo, Askira-Uba local government. My thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families and all those affected by these disasters.”

The governor assured that no one would be left without support and that humanitarian aid had already been sent to Rumirgo.

“I have instructed SEMA to immediately provide relief supplies to Gumsuri and Wovi communities,” he added.

The latest disaster comes less than a year after another flood tragedy submerged several Borno communities, killing scores, destroying homes, farmlands, and critical infrastructure.

The state government says it remains committed to providing emergency assistance and long-term support to affected residents as climate-induced emergencies continue to challenge local resilience.
