The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), under the leadership of its President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, has strongly condemned the abduction of Hon. Justice Ebiyerin Goodness Omukoro of the Bayelsa State High Court, describing it as a brazen assault on the judiciary and a further indictment of Nigeria’s failing security architecture.

Justice Omukoro was reportedly kidnapped on Saturday, June 21, 2025, in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, by armed men suspected to be in uniform. The incident has sent shockwaves across the legal community and reignited concerns over the safety of judicial officers in the country.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Osigwe expressed the NBA’s deep concern and outrage over the development.

“The NBA received with rude shock the kidnapping of Hon. Justice Ebiyerin Goodness Omukoro of the Bayelsa State High Court. We condemn this incident in strong terms, viewing it as an assault on the judiciary,” the statement read.

He lamented the increasing threats to the judiciary, particularly the disturbing report that the perpetrators were allegedly in uniform.

“How a serving judge was kidnapped by persons in uniform is a further indictment of our security architecture. This further paints a dire image of our judicial system. The dignity of human persons is so sacrosanct, more so than that of a judge,” Osigwe said.

The NBA President called on the Bayelsa State Government and security agencies to intensify their efforts to secure the immediate and unconditional release of Justice Omukoro.

“We therefore call upon security agencies and the Bayelsa State Government to redouble their efforts and ensure the swift release of the Hon. Justice E.G. Omukoro,” he added.

Osigwe assured that the NBA National Secretariat is closely monitoring the situation in coordination with the Bayelsa Bar and extended thoughts and prayers to the judge’s family, the legal community, and the State Judiciary during this difficult time.
