A dramatic scene played out at an Ilorin Area Court on Monday when an ex-convict, Segun Samuel, attempted a brazen escape from custody, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

According to the prosecution lawyer, ASP Samuel Mayowa, the incident occurred shortly before the commencement of a scheduled hearing in one of the suspect’s multiple criminal cases.

“He has four different criminal cases in this court,” Mayowa told NAN. “One of the cases was heard on Monday and he was sentenced to one year imprisonment. In another, he received six months of community service. The third case was to be heard today before he pulled that stunt.”

Mayowa narrated how Samuel cunningly used a broomstick to remove the chains on his legs, walked slowly toward the restroom, and suddenly scaled the court fence in an attempt to flee.

Quick response from police officers and a prison warder stationed at the court triggered a chase. With support from community members, the fleeing suspect was eventually tracked to a dilapidated building in the Oke-Suna area of Ilorin.

The Correctional Service was contacted, and the ex-convict was apprehended and returned to custody without further incident.

Court authorities say additional charges relating to the escape attempt may now be filed against him.
