Governor Josh Stein of North Carolina has officially proclaimed June 14, 2025, as “Igbo Day” across the state, recognising the remarkable contributions of the Igbo community to the social, economic, and cultural life of North Carolina.

The proclamation celebrates the rich heritage of the Igbos—an ethnic group originating from southeastern Nigeria—many of whom have made North Carolina their home for over five decades. Governor Stein acknowledged that Igbos in the state have thrived in critical sectors including education, law, medicine, entrepreneurship, information technology, and the arts.

“Igbos in North Carolina are involved in many charitable causes and have contributed significantly to the economy,” Governor Stein stated in the proclamation. “They have participated in elections, excelled in their careers, and volunteered in schools, hospitals, food pantries, and local festivals.”

The proclamation also highlighted the establishment of the Igbo Day Festival Organisation, a nonprofit founded in 2022 to promote and preserve Igbo cultural traditions through art, music, language, and community service. The first Igbo Day Festival was held on July 10, 2022, drawing attention to the vibrant legacy and aspirations of the Igbo people in the diaspora.

According to the governor, the group’s mission extends beyond cultural celebration, focusing on civic engagement and youth education. “The Igbo community aspires to create an environment where their members thrive, traditions flourish, and their contributions to society are recognised and valued,” the proclamation read.

The declaration honours the Igbos’ deep commitment to community development, their role in civic life, and their efforts in fostering a strong sense of unity and cultural pride.

Governor Stein concluded by calling on all residents of North Carolina to join in commemorating the occasion:
“NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSH STEIN, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim June 14, 2025, as ‘IGBO DAY’ in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.”
