United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has strongly condemned the deadly attacks carried out over the weekend in Yelewata, Benue State, North Central Nigeria, in which scores of civilians were reportedly killed.

Guterres called for the perpetrators of the violence to be swiftly apprehended and brought to justice.

According to local reports, dozens of people were brutally murdered in their sleep, and several others displaced, following coordinated assaults on the Yelewata community in Guma Local Government Area.

Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, stated on Monday that the UN was closely monitoring the situation.

“The Secretary-General condemns the killing of innocent civilians, including in Nigeria, and we hope that those responsible for this violence will be found and apprehended,” Haq said.

In response to the tragedy, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu also condemned the escalating violence in Benue and called on all leaders and citizens to embrace peace, unity, and mutual understanding.

The president is expected to visit Benue State on Wednesday as part of renewed efforts to address the persistent insecurity and foster reconciliation among affected communities.
