The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, has called on legal practitioners across the country to recommit to the core values of the profession—ethics, professionalism, and integrity—while embracing innovation to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving legal landscape.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 2025 Annual Law Week of the NBA Lagos Branch, themed “Reimagining the Practice of Law: Ethics, Innovation and the Future of Legal Services. Let’s Be Lawyers Again,” Osigwe described the theme as a powerful reflection of current realities in legal practice.

In his goodwill address, the NBA President lauded the Lagos Branch leadership and planning committee for curating a timely and thought-provoking agenda. He stressed that as lawyers navigate global shifts, economic challenges, and technological disruptions, they must remain grounded in the ethical ideals that distinguish the legal profession.

“It is not enough to innovate or expand practice areas,” he said. “We must return to the core of what makes us lawyers—integrity, professionalism, and fidelity to the rule of law.”

Osigwe highlighted the 2025 Mandatory Continuing Professional Development (MCPD) Rules, which require every lawyer to earn at least five CPD credit hours annually. He urged members of the Bar to see this not as a burden but as a standard that ensures continued excellence and public trust.

He also emphasized the responsible integration of technology into legal services. While embracing tools that enhance efficiency, he warned against compromising the ethical duties and identity of the legal profession.

“The legal profession must evolve, but in doing so, we must never become strangers to the values that built our credibility. Let us reimagine the future of law with courage and with conscience.”
