Indian authorities have arrested a Nigerian woman residing illegally in the country after overstaying her visa. She was apprehended at her rented apartment in Kondhwa, Pune, by operatives of the Foreigners Registration Office of the Pune City Police, following a tip-off from concerned residents in her neighbourhood.

According to The Indian Express, a police investigation revealed that the woman’s visa had expired, yet she continued living in the apartment without valid immigration documentation. Further inquiries led officers to the landlord and the real estate agent involved in facilitating the rental arrangement.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajkumar Shinde confirmed that the Nigerian national had bargained with the duo to rent the property despite not possessing the required immigration clearance.

A subsequent press release on Thursday revealed that the apartment owner claimed he had rented the flat to the woman through a real estate agent, Adnan Bohra (29), of Bhagyoday Nagar in Kondhwa. However, police said no rent agreement was prepared, and the mandatory police verification process was not followed prior to handing over the apartment.

Under Indian regulations, homeowners and agents are required to submit a C-form detailing the particulars of any foreign national to whom they rent property. The failure to comply with this protocol has led to the registration of an offence against both the landlord and the agent under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to disobedience to an order lawfully promulgated by a public servant, along with Section 3(5) of the BNS.

The case is being handled at the Kondhwa Police Station, where Senior Police Inspector Vinay Patankar confirmed that further investigation is underway.

Authorities emphasized that the incident highlights the critical need for landlords and property agents to ensure proper documentation and verification when renting to foreign nationals, in line with Indian immigration laws.
