In a sharp diplomatic response to the United States, Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno has ordered the immediate suspension of visa issuance to U.S. citizens, citing the need to uphold national dignity following Washington’s travel restrictions.

The move comes after Chad was listed among 12 countries affected by a controversial travel ban issued under the administration of former U.S. President Donald Trump, who said the restrictions were aimed at safeguarding American national security.

In a statement shared via Facebook on Thursday, President Itno announced the retaliatory measure:

“I instructed the government to act in accordance with the principles of reciprocity and suspend the issuance of visas to citizens of the United States of America,” he wrote.

“Chad has no planes to offer, no billions of dollars to give, but Chad has its dignity and pride.”

Chad becomes the first African nation to officially retaliate against the longstanding U.S. travel ban, which has disproportionately impacted African and Muslim-majority countries. Of the 12 nations on the list, seven are African, making the continent the worst hit by the order.

Countries named in the original U.S. ban include Afghanistan, Chad, Congo, Yemen, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Sudan, Myanmar, Somalia, Libya, and Equatorial Guinea. Additional countries such as Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela were placed under heightened visa restrictions, though the policy provided for exemptions on a “case-by-case” basis through the U.S. Secretary of State.

The African Union (AU) has voiced its disapproval of the travel restrictions, expressing concern about their “negative impact” and urging the U.S. to engage in “a more consultative approach” with affected nations.
