Global superstar Jennifer Lopez is facing a copyright infringement lawsuit over social media posts featuring unauthorized photographs taken at a pre-Golden Globes party earlier this year.

In separate but related complaints filed on May 17, celebrity photographer Edwin Blanco and media agency Backgrid USA accused Lopez of posting their co-owned images on Instagram and X (formerly Twitter) without obtaining the necessary rights or licensing agreements.
The photos in question, taken on January 4, 2025, show Lopez arriving and departing the Vanity Fair and Amazon MGM Studios awards season celebration at Chateau Marmont’s Bar Marmont in Hollywood. The images, which depict the singer-actress in a fur coat and white slip dress, remain live on her social media platforms and are not watermarked.
According to court documents, Lopez’s team allegedly made no effort to contact Blanco or Backgrid for permission or to license the images. Lawyers for the plaintiffs stated that the unauthorized use resulted in rapid online dissemination, including reposts by Lopez fan accounts and a promotional post by fashion brand Adrienne Landau, which designed her outfit for the event.
Calling the Adrienne Landau post “particularly egregious,” the plaintiffs argue that Lopez’s actions directly benefitted her public image and the designer’s brand “without permission or compensation.”
The lawsuit describes Lopez’s use of the images as “commercial in nature” and aimed at “self-promotion.” Attorneys claim that both parties attempted to settle the matter amicably, with Lopez’s representatives entering discussions to pay for usage rights. However, despite reaching an informal agreement, Lopez allegedly failed to sign the settlement.
Blanco and Backgrid are seeking up to $150,000 in damages, citing two counts of copyright infringement and breach of contract stemming from the unfinalized settlement. They have requested a jury trial.
Neither Lopez nor her legal representatives have publicly commented on the matter, and attempts to reach all involved parties remain unanswered as of press time.
Backgrid, known for its aggressive copyright enforcement, has previously filed similar lawsuits against celebrities such as Justin Bieber, Lisa Rinna, and Christina Milian for unauthorized use of its photographs.
